The Week in Review, 14.4...'There may be one, that's just RIGHT in your wheelhouse..you don't know.

What a week folks, stay with me on this..its a little wordy, but not too bad.
I've heard a lot of ways to explain to athletes why they need to do the Open. A lot is propaganda...believe me - I know the difference. BUT, the reason why it works most of the time is because there is either a small nugget or a large chunk of reality and truth in the tagline. 'You should do the Open! See how far you've come! You'll really get a sense of what you need to work on!"....True. Also, a very sneaky way to get folks to pay $20 to register for something you can do on your own? Yes. True. BUT, guess what - you wouldn't. Do it on your own. Not the same way. Not with 100 people cheering as you miserably chip through a seemingly insurmountable pile of T2B...Not with 5 other of your teammates starting the wod right beside you with some TRULY epic soundtrack playing..(humor me). Its. Not. The. Same. Its worth every penny. I'd do it again - it'd be great if it was free, but guess what - I'm trying to think of something I'm invested in emotionally, really and truly, that's free - I can't think of much...except Candy Crush..damnit. I always say that I've seen athletes transform as a result of competition, and for most athletes the intro to competition is the Open. This year has been no different - it has been, if anything, even more amazing.
"We're a team; always have been. We don't have any crazy-ass Games level super-ballers...don't get me wrong, we got some ballers, but you don't see Jason Khalipa anywhere around here do ya? No. We survive as a team. You don't know when that WoD is going to come up that's YOUR WoD; right in your wheelhouse...you don't know. That's when you step up and contribute - if you think that its only the folks who get to suit up and go to Regionals that get us there, you're wrong. Its everybody together. Just because you don't get to put your uniform on every game, doesn't mean you aren't part of the team." - Kimi J (I can almost hear her say it...can't you see the hand gestures?...)
Kim is right. I'm talking to you all. You all have done something great this year. 14.4 showed us some deficiencies and some unbelievable heart. Some bad plans and some determination. Disappointment and an unstoppable show of strength and spirit...right down to the wire....Crazy? No. Unbelievable? No. Exactly what we have been saying all along - yes. Winston Churchill said it best, and its one of my all time favorite quotes:
“To each there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents. What a tragedy if that moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour.” - Winston Churchill

Every opportunity you take that you convert into a glorious triumph, no matter how small, no matter how seemingly insignificant - makes it harder to give up on the things that are truly important, when it matters - when the chips are down. Remember that.
Thanks to all of our Judges, Coaches, Volunteers and Athletes for making this Open the best yet so far. Stay strong and healthy, train safe. See you at the gym.
