Justin Jackson

Co-Owner, Head Coach, CrossFit Program Director - CF L2

I’m Justin Jackson Owner here at Crossfit Tier 1. Growing up I was a big jock. I played football, basketball, and baseball all through school. I Always loved weightlifting and fitness. I went on to play college football before I compound fractured my ankle. I quit football, became inactive, and gained 20-30 pounds over the next year. I decided it was time for a change not just on a personal level but from a career standpoint as well. I decided I was going to change my life. I took a personal fitness training class just for fun and I really enjoyed that experience so I took the test to become a certified trainer in 2007. That summer I made my mind up I was going to get back in shape so I walked into a new gym in my hometown Kill Devil Hills NC called Crossfit OBX. After becoming completely captivated and losing 15-20lbs while becoming stronger I was now fully a believer in Crossfit. I then transferred to ECU and changed my major to exercise physiology and became Crossfit Level 1 certified helping coach classes at Crossfit OBX over summers and when I was home during school over the next couple of years. From this point forward, I began competing and training through Crossfit principles.

After graduating with an Exercise Physiology degree, and minor in Nutrition I was hired as an exercise specialist at the Vidant Wellness Center here in Greenville. After working as a full-time exercise specialist for 4+ years exposing myself to more of a clinical environment, learning lots about exercise prescription and risk stratification for deconditioned individuals. Within that journey I was fortunate enough to reignite my passion for competitive functional fitness, I then helped develop and create a functional fitness space within the wellness center where for almost 2 years I was the head coach and programming director. At this time, I completely re-focused my energy into Crossfit Methodology and USAW weightlifting principles, I earned my Crossfit Level 2 certification and I now know for a fact coaching is what I want to do with my life in some capacity. Looking back, I’m thankful for that opportunity even though I’ve moved on to starting my own personal training business and being a part of this experienced, highly skilled, and diverse coaching team here at Crossfit Tier 1. I finally feel like I am where I belong. I love coaching, training, and suffering with the staff and community here at Tier 1. I’ve learned a lot from the great coaching staff, and I know I’ll continue to learn new things and hopefully contribute the to the depth and expertise of the team. Hope to see you guys at the box! Beth Peterson

My name is Beth Petersen and I am a CrossFit Level 1 Coach at Tier 1. Our family moved to Greenville, the beginning of 2016, because of the opportunity my husband was offered to become the Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks coach for ECU Football. From the moment we moved here it has felt like home – everyone we have met has been so welcoming and I can’t express how incredibly lucky I am to have walked through the doors at Tier 1. The friends I have made are priceless!!!

I have been a lifelong athlete, competitor and overall fitness fanatic. I started CrossFit in 2012, in West Virginia, where I convinced my friend into going with me after watching the CrossFit Games. I loved it and was hooked from the moment I finished that first excruciating WOD of 7 minutes of target burpees! CrossFit has not only taken me to the next level of fitness, finishing the Open in the top 200 in the world to be able to compete in the 2014-2016 CrossFit Southeast Regional Qualifiers and the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Regional Qualifer. but has also offered me friendships, encouragement and camaraderie. I believe CrossFit has helped me to push out of my comfort zones and found that it acceptable to be a woman that likes to lift weights and have muscles. Each day is truly a new adventure and I get so excited to know I can do things I never thought I would be able to do at my age; ring muscle ups, strict handstand pushups, backsquat, snatch, butterfly chest to bar pull ups…. I proudly embrace the slogan “Strong is the new Skinny” and hope to be a good role model for all other CrossFit athletes regardless of age and ability. As a coach, my goal is to connect with everyone I train in a way that motivates and excites them to always improve and perform at their highest level.

My name is Thomas Hoerauf and I am a Crossfit Level 1 Coach at Tier 1.  I am currently studying Health Fitness Specialist at East Carolina University.  After school I hope to pursue a career in either Athletic Training or Sports Medicine.  As a coach I love to watch members meet and exceed their fitness goals, and love meeting new people.

Britt Theurer is a musician, recently retired from East Carolina University where he was Professor of Trumpet and Chair of Theory, Composition, and Musicology. He still loves to compose, but has for two years been consumed by a passion for CrossFit!!
